Engagement Session FAQs

Why should we do an engagement session?

I can't think of too many things more awkward than taking direction from a stranger with an imaging computer between you and their face. Now imagine that interaction happening for the first time on your wedding day. Your engagement session is a relaxed warm-up. It's the perfect chance for us to connect, for you to get comfortable with my direction, and to create some genuinely incredible portraits that reflect your personalities. Optimally, your wedding day should feel like an old friend is capturing your most important moments.

What's your style for engagement photos?

My engagement style mirrors my wedding approach: a dynamic blend. We'll capture your authentic, candid interactions – the real you, just being yourselves. Then, we'll shift to create those dramatic, movie-poster style portraits that are truly unique to my work – striking, artistic images that celebrate your love story in an iconic way. Think of it as your love story, Hollywood-style.

Where should we have our engagement session?

Do you have location suggestions? We can discuss locations that are meaningful to you, or I can suggest spots that align with your desired vibe. Whether it's a cozy cafe, a local beach, or a trendy museum, we'll find the perfect setting for your engagement photos. I'll do my best to take care of logistics, but just keep in mind that quite a few places need some kind permitting/permission for access.

Can we use our engagement photos for our save-the-dates or wedding website?

I try to deliver the sessions within a few days so you can use the high-res digital files for save-the-dates, your wedding website, social media, or even as guest book prints. While images from your gallery are readily available for printing through my website, your engagement photos can easily be taken to the print service of your choice.

Do you offer albums or prints for engagement photos?

Absolutely! Your engagement photos are a beautiful prelude to your wedding story, and they deserve to be seen. Many couples opt for a smaller album or a stunning wall art piece to display. It's a wonderful way to begin building your collection of tangible, cherished memories – something you can actually hold, not just scroll through.

What to Wear FAQ/Guidelines

What's the most important thing to consider when choosing our outfits?

Comfort, first and foremost. Seriously. If you're tugging, pulling, or feeling awkward, it'll show. Choose clothes that make you feel good and allow you to move freely. Beyond that, think about what makes you feel like yourselves.

How many outfits should we bring?

Typically, two to three outfits work best. This gives us variety without eating up too much of our session time with wardrobe changes. Think: one more casual, everyday look, and one slightly dressier option. If you're feeling ambitious, a third could be something fun and unique to you as a couple.

What colors and patterns work best (or worst) on camera?

Generally, solid colors or subtle patterns work well. Neutrals (creams, grays, tans, muted blues/greens) are always a safe bet and keep the focus on you. Bold, busy patterns can sometimes draw the eye away from your faces. Super bright, neon colors can also cast distracting color onto your skin.

Any specific advice for shoes?

Bring comfortable shoes, especially if we're walking around. You can always bring a dressier pair for specific shots. Also, consider the location. High heels on a sandy beach? Not ideal. Practicality wins the day here.

What about accessories?

Keep it simple. A few well-chosen accessories can add to your look, but too many can be distracting. Think about jewelry that's meaningful to you, or anything that fits your style. If you're bringing props (like a favorite book or a keepsake), make sure they genuinely reflect your personality.

Should we get our hair and makeup professionally done?

Totally up to you, but I highly recommend it, especially for hair and makeup that will be done for your wedding. It helps ensure you look and feel your best, and professional artists know how to make makeup translate beautifully on camera. The move is to do your hair and makeup trial earlier in the day if possible.

What should we avoid wearing?

Anything that makes you uncomfortable or anything with large logos or distracting graphics. Remember, the goal is for the focus to be on you and your connection, not on your t-shirt slogan. Also, avoid anything you'll regret looking back on in 20 years. Trends come and go, but your love is timeless.

Got more questions about wardrobe, or anything else? Don't hesitate to ask. My goal is to make this process clear and fun, so you can just focus on being yourselves!
